Clothing Recommendations

Clothing is this: simple goes a long way! I like to keep the focus on the subject(s), therefore, simple clothing choices are best for creating timeless portraits. I suggest loose fitting, bright solid colors, avoiding busy patterns or logos/words. Blue's Clues and Hannah Montana are cute for playtime, but can look out of place for your child's portraits.Jeans, overalls, sun/slip dresses are great choices and khakis are classics and photograph well. I especially like boys in jeans and plain tees, and girls in simple sundresses, weather permitting of course. Boots, trendy shoes, strappy sandals,  fun, fashionable heels and barefoot work best. No tennis shoes unless they are stylish!!

Hats can also be very effective, as well as other accessories such as scarves, funky belts. Tutus, funky socks, cowboy hats and boots and costume jewelry work great. If children are being photographed together or in family sessions, clothes that are similar in style give a more coordinated, polished look. I highly suggest clothing for each family member that has the same tone, not necessarily the same color. Please be wary of stripes, plaids, words and logos on your family's clothing as these things can be a distraction from your beautiful family. Bare feet are especially fun, and kids love it too. If shoes are preferred, please make sure they are in good shape and not scuffed. Stylish high heels for mom, preferably bright in color add a lot of fun to your portraits. Consider dressing in the color white sparingly...for this color often reflects light too strongly.

Bare skin is my fav on newborns and babies. You may have other clothes to put on your baby, but keep in mind, he/she may get grouchy when there are too many clothing changes. Diaper covers are a great idea too, especially ones with their name or initials embroidered on them!

I suggest bringing a few outfits that you are considering and allowing me to help you make the final choice on what would best suit the look and feel you are going for in your child/family portraits. I also have a few items on hand such as knit hats, flower headbands, vintage suitcases and bicycle and more that you are more than welcome to incorporate into your session.

Lets say, however, you want a trendier look for you, your child or your family. Well then things change a bit! I love the timeless looks in the clothing mentioned above, but also enjoy photographing a session with a more "hip" feel to it. I still caution against bold logos or cartoon characters on clothing. please let me know ahead of time if you'd like to try for a trendier look, or a more classic look or even both!
